Vote on May 12th - an Amendment to the Texas Constitution
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ballot will allow you to vote on an amendment to the Texas Constitution.
The amendment will correct an oversight (error) by the Austin lawmakers when they voted for a reduction in school property taxes in 2005. When they voted for a one-third reduction in individual's school property tax burden beginning in 2006, they did not consider the long standing "homestead exemption" that provides tax relief for senior citizens and the disabled.  The State Constitution caps school property taxes for homeowners 65 years and older and those who are disabled at the level in effect at the time any qualified Texas citizen makes application.
Unfortunately, when the ISD property "tax cut" was approved, the existing provision for those that had protection under the "homestead exemption" provision of the Constitution was not considered and they did not get the benefit of the "tax cut".
Election Day is May 12.
Voting is from 7am to 7 pm at the Community Services Building 2235 Lake Robbins Drive, next to the Library.
We urge you to vote yes if you are over 65 or plan to be over 65 one day.
May 2007 Yard of the Month Winner
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
May 2007 Yard of the MonthThe yard of the month in Grogan's Mill for May goes to Violet Hargrove. Her home is located at 2004 North Red Cedar Circle and is an inspiration to us all. While handling her job as an accountant and watching over her grandson, Violet does her own planning and planting, with the exception of mowing & edging. She has lived in this Grogan's Mill location for nine years and has built her landscaping as she has time.

Among raised beds surrounded by red sandstone, you will find begonias, roses, lily of the nile, various shrubs, scheffelera and numerous other healthy, beautiful plants. We can all find motivation & inspiration in Ms. Hargroves' efforts. Congratulations Violet!

If you would like to nominate a home for Yard of the Month, please see our Web site for information.

Go to an Astros Game and Leave the Driving to Us
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The village will again sponsor a trip to the Astro's vs. Mets game on July 7th.  Tickets will be $11 and the Village Association will provide free bus transportation to and from the game.  For tickets call Joe Giovanniello 281-363-2698.  As a bonus we received another eleven seats to the Braves game on September 29th.  We are looking for ways to give these seats away that will support the community.  If you have suggestions for how to do this let us know.
Wal-Mart Updates and Complaints
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The GMVA and Wal-Mart will hold a meeting on Tuesday, May 16th, at 2:30 in the afternoon. The meeting will be held at the site and we will meet in the driveway.  Wal-Mart will have their Community Relations Director, engineers and architects on hand to answer questions.  This meeting is open to residents of Dreamweaver and Wind Whisper and others who are directly affected.  County and school board member have also been invited. If you would like to attend, or if you can't attend but have questions you would like us to ask, please let us know at suggestions@gmva.org.

We will continue to monitor this situation and if you have concerns please contact us through the GMVA Web site. Dan Avalos is the Board member who is working directly with Wal-Mart.

Sound Wall Updates
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TxDOT is working on the assumption that a noise wall will be built from 82 to 124 N. Deerfoot.  We are still working to determine some of the finer details such as who has liability if a problem occurs with the wall.  We will be asking the WCA to pick up this cost.
If you have questions Jim Upham is the local coordinator for this effort.
WCA Examines Purchase of the Woodlands Athletic Center
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One year after The Woodlands Development Company said it would close The Woodlands Athletic Club in September 2008, a Woodlands Community Association board member wants the board to consider buying the property for use as a community-wide master recreational facility.

Robert Tyson, who represents residents in Grogan's Mill - the village where the WAC is located - suggested at a recent WCA meeting closing the 12 neighborhood pools sprinkled throughout The Woodlands in neighborhood parks and instead operating the WAC.

At the May 21st GMVA Meeting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lynne Aldrich - Manager Environmental Services will be making a presentation on this year's mosquito control program.  We have new types of mosquitoes in the area and control requires new techniques.  Spraying will not be done.  Come and find out what you can do.
Alligator Removed
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Residents had reported seeing an alligator along the Nature Path between Grogan's Mill and Panther Creek.  The alligator apparently had been on the golf course for years but has moved closer to the path, near the 16th green on the Panther Trails course.  A private company removed the alligator two weeks ago, after resident complained about the animal.  Bill Langley, managing director of The Woodlands, confirmed the news.

New Gardening Page on Web Site
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The GMVA has added a new page to its Web site specifically for gardeners.  This page offers tips on gardening and lawn maintenance.  We encourage residents to send in their own gardening tips and we will post the tips on our Web site.
Local Scout Needs Flags for Eagle Scout Project
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Benjamin Smart, of Troop 204, plans to educate our community on the correct way to retire worn American flags for his Eagle project. In order to do this he will retire flags during the 4th of July Market Street Red, White & Blue Celebration. Flags are being collected at the First National Bank located in the Sterling Ridge shopping center. His goal is to collect 500 worn, faded and tattered flags to retire this coming July 4th.
